Sydnie Jimenez is an ceramicist and sculpture artist, currently based in Chicago. Beyond the large eyes and bold colors on natural tones of her figures lies deeper conversations around representation for Black/brown people, individual expression, and community ties. Jimenez’s craft grew as a way to represent the bodies of those who look like her and who have historically been left out of her medium. She was a recipient of the Windgate Fellowship (2020) and the SPARK grant (2021).

Jimenez intersects many of my interests into her work: Black characters, dynamic expressions, fashion, and ceramics. When I stumbled upon her work on Pinterest, I was blown away by her figures because I had never seen anything like it before. Her work aims to center the Black and fat, creating the representation that she had longed to see in art and sculpture. She takes pride in having her audience see themselves in her figures and I similarly fall into that camp when it comes to anything I create.
